Kim K

Dear Kimberly Kardashian,

This past semester I have taken a class at Brigham Young University which focuses on how media effects families. I have learned a lot about how body image is impacted through the media. We have had lectures on how social media influences society, and how posting images of unrealistic body types really hurts girl’s self-esteem. Did you know that 53% of 13 year-old girls are unhappy with their bodies? And that number increases to 78% by age 17 and 65% of women have an eating disorder?
I am not accusing you specifically to have any correlation with these staggering statistics, however you often use social media to show your perfect body. I believe that we should be able to post what we want on social media, but I also believe that we should use social media to influence humanity in a positive way. You have 153 million followers on Instagram, and 62.5 million followers on twitter. You have such a large platform in which you could do so much good. I would ask you to reconsider the way you use social media after reading more about how many girls struggle with body image.
I admire how much you love and care for your children and that family is your number 1 priority. I feel like you are setting a great example to families around the world of how crucial it is to have strong family relationships. I am a family studies major and I too believe that family relationships are of the utmost importance. I also admire how you care for those in need of legal help and your drive and motivation to receive your law degree to help others.
If we all come together and make social media a place of love and appreciation, I truly believe that the world will be a better place.
                                                                                    Love,
                                                                                                Ashley Sobotka

  3. Yes! Girls get into such a downward spiral because they compare themselves to women like Kim Kardashian. I am sure she is great, but she can definitely post more uplifting things!
